This article examines the geopolitical significance of the Ili region for the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century. The study analyzes the natural-geographical position of the region, its resource potential, and transport and communication capabilities within the framework of Russian foreign policy. It also explores the connections of the Ili region with the Qing Empire, Central Asia, and international trade routes. The author argues that the Ili region played a crucial role in strengthening the Russian Empire’s influence in Eastern Turkestan and shaping the regional balance of power.
